It’s Friday, San Diego, so what’s on your agenda this weekend? As we all take a tentative step towards more options for outdoor activities, shopping, and even the possibility of in-house dining on the horizon, it finally feels like there’s light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. We’ve got plenty of options, so once you’ve gotten out for some sunshine and exercise, consider a weekend long trip to Australia, a virtual visit to the wine region just a couple hours south in Baja, or trivia at the Nat. We’ve also got a cool “hot” yoga class, a sourdough workshop and a hands-on demo of a classic Italian pasta. Bon appetit!

Take a bucket list trip to Australia, kind of

In between, there’s cooking classes, wine tasting, cheesemaking, golf instruction, pub trivia, crocodile encounters, hourly workshops, kid’s events, and tips and tricks for the ultimate Sunday barbeque.

Diner and a movie for a good cause

Friday, May 15 - Sunday, May 17
#TheGreatAmericanTakeout has been encouraging everyone who’s able to support the hospitality industry by ordering takeout from their favorite San Diego restaurant at least once a week. And, really, a nice hot meal to go sounds like a great idea, especially at the end of a long week. Grab drinks and dinner from our must-try list and settle in with A Fine Line, an award-winning documentary about women in the restaurant industry, and why, when women traditionally hold a central role in the kitchen at home, they represent fewer than 7% of restaurant owners and head chefs.
Cost: Free, donations are encouraged, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Restaurant Relief Fund

Visit the Valle de Guadalupe

Friday, May 15
You’ll have to wait a little longer to go wine tasting in the Valle de Guadalupe, but virtual tour guide Tony Uribe of Baja Wine Tours will take you to two of the Valle’s most beautiful vineyards for an evening tasting and Q&A with the winemakers. On hand will be Lourdes Martinez Ojeda, a Baja native who brought her decade of training in Bordeaux at Château Brane-Cantenac back to the Vinícola Bruma, and Kris Magnussen Shute, a Central Coast transplant who developed Lechuza Wines’ program. Pour yourself a glass of Nebbiolo and hear how these young, talented winemakers are taking the Valle de Guadalupe from a tourist curiosity to a true wine destination.
Cost: Free, RSVP online to receive access

Try trivia at the Nat

Friday, May 15

Mix up a pitcher of drinks, call your friends, and join trivia host extraordinaire Jeff Minck and program manager Emma Bloom for a night of questions and camaraderie, live via its Facebook page.

Wake up with “hot” yoga

Saturday, May 16
Join popular San Diego yoga instructor Janell Small for a noon “hot” yoga class via her Instagram Live feed at noon. Stir up some sourdough

Saturday, May 16
Quarantine Instagram is bulging with boules, baguettes, and brioche, glossy and delicate or flour-dusted and rustic, thanks to the sudden collective urge to bake. With regular baker’s yeast increasingly hard to find, bakers are turning to sourdough, a natural yeast leavening that can be found all around us. Find out what the fuss is all about in Chef Horácio “Toco” Coutinho, Jr. and the San Diego Craft Collective’s one-hour workshop. You’ll learn about collecting natural yeast and crafting your own homemade bread using regular pantry ingredients, conventional utensils and your home oven. Beginners are welcome.

Make an Italian classic from scratch

Sunday, May 17
If you’ve been doing a lot more cooking at home, you’re not alone, and it gets challenging to come up with new, interesting dishes, especially if you cook for others. Chef Giacomo at A Casa Mia will teach you the ins and outs of perfectly plump, pillowy gnocchi, dressed in a silky, herbaceous pesto sauce. Register online and you’ll receive a delivery of all the necessary ingredients for dinner for two, along with access to a 90-minute class where you’ll cook along and then enjoy the fruits of your labors. Plan ahead for next weekend’s dinners while you’re at it, upcoming classes include pizza passo and bucatini carbonara.
